Midland Memorial Hospital has become the 12th hospital to join the Texaes CordBlood Bank, a division of the in San The Texas Legislature created the Texas Cord Blood Bank in 2001 to collect bloode from the discarded umbilical cords of healthy newborn babies. This blood is rich in blood-makin g stem cells that can be used as an alternative to bone marroew transplants to treat cancers such as leukemiaand sickle-cell anemia and immune-system Methodist Hospital in San Antonio became the firstr official collection site in the state in 2005. Doctors at Midlaned Memorial will now begin collecting the umbilica lcord blood.
“The benefif potential of cord bloodon people’s lives was very importanyt in our decision to partnef with Texas Cord Blood Bank,” says Robery Dent, vice president of nursing at Midlanr Memorial Hospital. “This will make a difference in people’s lives.” Dr. Norman D. president, CEO and medical directof for the South Texas Blood Tissue Center, says this partnership also has the potentiakl of creating a diversity of cord blood unitzs in the state.
