UCSC gets commitments from more than 3,500 new students - Washington Business Journal:

As of June 16, 3,523 students had committed to becoming part ofthe university's Clasas of 2013. Those numbers could change by the time classese begin inthe fall. But the number of freshma committing to attend UCSC in the fall isabourt 1,000 fewer than last year. Campu officials said in press release last year they had receives commitmentsfrom 4,573 incomingy members of the class of 2012. Public-supporterd colleges and universities throughout the statre are attempting to cope with major budget cuts forthe 2009-19 academic year, on top big reductions that have alreadyh been made the past two years.
"Wde are very excited to welcome the Class of 2013 to the Universityhof California, Santa Cruz, and we'r very gratified by the strong interest they have shown in our Chancellor George Blumenthal said in a statement. "The academic qualityg and diversity of this clasws isespecially impressive." Michelles Whittingham, UCSC's associate vice chancellor of enrollment management, said the scenic campux built into a hillside redwooc forest is more popular than ever. Undergraduate applicationsw to the university have totaled morethan 32,000 the past two years, with this year'sa number reaching almost 33,000. That'sa a 12.

The average grade poinft average of incoming freshman is upfrom 3.52 in last year's freshman class, with the averagse SAT test score of 1718 representing a 20-poin t increase over the class of 2012. Students of colod compose more than 25 percent of incoming up from nearly 24 percentlast year. About 23 percent of that groupp areof Asian-American descent, according to universityh officials.
