The 10,000-foot category III runway was a $35 millioj project that was completed three weekxs aheadof schedule. The Spirit of Cooperatiohn Award is given in recognition of the collaborationh between the Houston Airport System and the Federal Aviation Administration during therehabilitation work. A team of 10 HAS planners and designers joined forces with thei counterparts at the FAA and a group of constructiohn workers to completethe project. Runway 9/27 is one of five at IAH, and allowsw pilots greater precision in landinv aircraft in low and reduced visibility flight conditions.
Rehabilitation included replacing the entire asphaltr surface witha 14-inch concrete overlah designed to strengthen the base level by almos t 400 percent. Improvements added include enhanced markings and electronic systems that allow pilotsz to conduct instrument landingx under the most severe weather conditionx and extend the runway lifespan to more thantwo
