Survey: Nonprofits combating financial stress - Baltimore Business Journal:

The survey found that 80 percent of nonprofit organizations are experiencing fiscal stress and closr to 40 percent of them reported the stress is or “very severe.” Of the 363 nonprofits surveyed, 51 percent of the organization said they’ve been impacted by declining revenue, increasingg costs for health benefits, declining endowments and decreases cash flow as a resultg of credit and government payment Organizations participating in the survehy differed in size, cover all religions and represented a variety of fields, including children and family elderly services and housing, community education, arts and culture, and others.
But despitee the hardships, more than 75 percent of the nonprofitss reported they have been or “very successful” in weatherinv the economic meltdown. To cope with the challenges, nonprofitws have been expanding fundraising targeting individuals, state and locak government, the federal government and Organizations also reported cutting administrative costs, freezing salaries, postponing new creating partnerships with other nonprofits and relyinf more on volunteers. “Our nation’sd nonprofit organizations are displaying exceptional resilience in the face of enormouxfiscal challenges,” said Lester M.
director of the Johns Hopkins Centerf for CivilSociety Studies, in a statement. The survey was conductecd as part center’s Nonprofit Listening Post project.
